Decisions, decisions.

At Ilmiö, we're on a journey to refine our decision-making process. As we grow, we're learning how to balance efficiency with inclusivity, and structure with flexibility. Here's an inside look at how we're approaching this crucial aspect of our company culture.

Keeping it simple

One thing's clear: we avoid unnecessary complexity. Take our organizational structure, for instance. We've chosen not to have a CEO because, frankly, we don't need one right now. This reflects our commitment to staying agile and only adding structure when it truly adds value.

Our board, consisting of three team members and an external advisor, handles the big-picture decisions. They step in for significant matters like employee benefits or annual budgets. But we prefer to keep these high-level decisions to a minimum, allowing our day-to-day operations to remain nimble and responsive.

Balancing Act: Collaboration and Autonomy

As we develop our approach to collective decision-making, we're navigating an interesting challenge. We want to ensure everyone's voice is heard, but we also value the efficiency of individual autonomy. It's a delicate balance, but we believe the sweet spot lies in genuine collaboration.

Diverse Perspectives, Unified Decisions

Our team brings a wealth of experience from various sectors - telecom, startups, large ICT firms, tech, and consulting. But it's not just our professional backgrounds that shape our decisions. Our personal histories and outlooks on life add depth to our decision-making process.

We've used various methods to reach conclusions, from informal coin flips for smaller tasks to more structured Slack polls for important decisions like finalizing our brand identity. While unanimous decisions aren't always possible (or necessary), we strive for a process that respects all viewpoints.

The Where and When of Decision-Making

Decisions at Ilmiö come to life through ongoing Slack interactions, face-to-face meetings, and regular catch-ups. We're still exploring which decisions are best made in person versus online, always aiming for the most effective approach.

Interestingly, we're also learning when not to decide. Sometimes, pausing or choosing not to make a choice can be the wisest move, especially when we lack complete information.

A Work in Progress

Our decision-making process at Ilmiö is still evolving, just like our company. We're committed to finding an approach that reflects our values of transparency, curiosity, and collaboration. As we continue to grow and learn, we'll keep refining our process, always with an eye on what's best for our team, our clients, and the talented professionals we serve.
